TENSHO & HANA ICHIMONME: Japanese Culinary Excellence in Los Angeles

TENSHO

SHABU-SHABU restaurant
418 E 2nd STREET, los angeles, USA
In the heart of Little Tokyo, TENSHO carries forward the proud legacy of Kagaya, once regarded as one of Los Angeles’ premier shabu-shabu restaurants.
The torch has since been passed to a new head chef and owner—the next generation entrusted with preserving its traditions and exquisite flavors while introducing elevated innovations—under the name TENSHO.
Trained in the art of traditional Japanese cuisine, this 23-year culinary veteran offers an authentic dining experience reminiscent of Japan itself. The reimagined menu blends beloved patron favorites with inspired new creations, complemented by an extensive sake selection. The dessert and à la carte offerings—crafted by a French-trained chef—seamlessly fuse Japanese precision with French artistry. Only the finest ingredients make the cut: premium A5 wagyu beef, meticulously sourced seafood of the highest quality, and dishes that are both indulgent and health-conscious.

This restaurant is amazing! The dishes are all presented beautifully.

The wagyu and seafood shabu shabu is mouthwatering. The chef is from Japan and was trained at a famous restaurant in Japan.

The desserts were equally beautifully presented and delicious. I will go back again. I will recommend this restaurant to my family and friends!!

Wagyu was perfect. The shabu comes with several Omakase like dishes plus dessert! Quality of meat was great!

Customer service was phenomenal. We brought our baby daughter and the staff were very kind and accommodating to all of us!

Simple easy and tasty Japanese food. If you want sushi, they have it! If you want a combination meal, they have it! They bring you a small bowl of edamame ,on the house , with hot rolled towels upon being seated.
I like this nice touch.

I had the Teriyaki salmon with tempura ( 2 pieces of shrimp and 5 pieces of veggies), cucumber wakame salad and a leafy green salad with a very tasty dressing, miso soup, rice for $21.00! This is a GREAT deal! My friend and I shared a bottle of dry sake which was perfect!

Great food especially for the price! I always go for lunch because they have some really nice lunch deals.

I got the sushi lunch plate for $13.50. I LOVE nigiri and I think the quality is really good at Kaido.

I would recommend stopping by. I’ve really missed sushi this pandemic but getting take out from here really hits the spot.

Have not been here in while, last time was 2-3 years ago, when I brought my parents. They loved it.  Wow looking back. First time was I came was over 30 years ago when I used to work near by.  It was my go to place back then. This place looks & taste the same.  Hasn’t changed at all except for slight change in price of course & they used to give us wooden ladle for soups but now plastic soup spoon. The whole world changed a lot and some people even no longer here but amazingly this place still remains preserved. Maybe even after I’m gone too.

DIAMOND BAR, CALIFORNIA

Located on the third floor of the Little Tokyo Mall with limited foot traffic, it’s nice to know this is an option for happy hour food and drinks or to grab a meal.

I had a deluxe omelette curry katsu–menchi (deep-fried ground meat), and it was delicious. Service was excellent, and my server was attentive, patient, and welcoming. I’ve had ramen in the past. I live in the area, so I aim to try out every restaurant in Little Tokyo and visit again.

I’ve been here a couple times, pre COVID and just recently. I’m so happy to see they are still here! We’ve gotta support the local culture in Little Tokyo before they are gentrified out!
I was jumping for joy when I searched their posted menu outside to find the ever elusive Deluxe Menchi Katsu Curry with Pilaf Rice!!! Ever since Curry House closed their doors, this specific dish became a thing of the past. OMG was I so happy beyond words! And to make it better, the staff was amazingly friendly, and the dish was DELICIOUS! slightly greasier then I’d like but perfect still.
The side salad that comes with your entree included your usual Romain lettuce, cherry tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, corn, and to my surprise, some rehydrated seaweed! Topped with a sesame dressing was actually pretty good!! Can’t wait to bring my family next time!!!

Get the spicy Chanpon….it’s tasty, spicy, filled with yummy seafood and tender pork. Man was it just sooo fulfilling and just a great ramen. This is a classic ramen spot with validated parking, great service and cold beers. All their ramens are recommended. Japanese shaved ice are are must try!! The ambiance is relaxed and inviting. This is one of my top 5 ramen spots and I am happy to have found it. Love the logo as well.

We need places like this to stay open and thrive. And make this Little Tokyo.. I miss classic Japanese food joints like this that were not bought out or couldn’t keep up with the inflation of rent to survive. I miss all the izakaya , ice cream and karaoke spots that once were in J-town.
Let’s keep supporting them.
